The Smoke That Thunders

The Zambezi runs wide and quiet across the basalt, and then simply disappears — dropping the width of the river into a narrow gorge in one continuous sheet. The roar reaches you long before the water does, and the spray column rises hundreds of metres above the bush, which is exactly how the falls earned their Lozi name, Mosi-oa-Tunya.

David Livingstone reached this stretch of river in 1855 and renamed it for Queen Victoria, but both names are still in everyday use — and the site has carried UNESCO World Heritage status since 1989.

Which Bank?

Two Countries, One Waterfall

The falls face two nations, and each bank gives you a genuinely different experience. The honest answer is that if your schedule allows it, you should see both — the border crossing takes minutes.

The Zimbabwe Side

Faces the great majority of the falls, so this is the side for the classic head-on view. A rainforest path runs the length of the gorge with viewpoint after viewpoint, and it holds water all year round — the safest choice if you are travelling late in the dry season.

The Zambia Side

Gets you closer to the edge than anywhere else. The Knife-Edge Bridge puts you right in the spray, and in low water you can walk out to Livingstone Island and swim in Devil's Pool at the very lip of the drop. Quieter, wilder, more hands-on.

Do Both

The Victoria Falls Bridge links the two towns and is an easy walk or transfer. We arrange the crossing, the paperwork and a guide on each bank, so a day on each side is straightforward rather than a border-post headache.

Things to Do at the Falls

Victoria Falls is one of the few places in Africa where the sightseeing and the adrenaline sit side by side. Everything below can be built into your itinerary.

The Rainforest Walk

The essential first morning. A path of viewpoints through permanently drenched forest, fed entirely by the spray. Take a poncho in high water — you will be soaked, and it is worth it.

Zambezi Sunset Cruise

Upstream of the drop, the river is broad and slow, with hippo, croc and elephant coming down to drink. Two hours on the water as the light goes orange — the gentlest evening of your trip.

Flight of Angels

Helicopter or microlight over the gorge. The only way to take in the entire width of the falls at once, and the single most photographed fifteen minutes of most people's trip.

Devil's Pool

A natural rock pool on the Zambian lip, where a lava ledge lets you swim to the very edge. Only safe when the river is low — usually the later months of the year — and always with the licensed guides from Livingstone Island.

White-Water Rafting

The Batoka Gorge below the falls is world-class big-water rafting. The full run is a serious day out; the season depends entirely on river level, so we book it around your dates.

Game Drives & Rhino

Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park on the Zambian bank and Zambezi National Park on the Zimbabwean bank both sit minutes from town — white rhino, elephant, buffalo and good birding without a long transfer.

Timing Your Visit

When to Go

There is no bad time to see Victoria Falls, but the river changes character completely across the year. What you want to do should decide when you come.

The falls at maximum power, fed by the summer rains upstream. Around April the volume is at its greatest and genuinely overwhelming — but so is the spray, and there are days when the wall of mist hides the water you came to look at. Best for sheer spectacle; bring waterproofs and expect a soaking. Rafting is usually closed at these levels.

Our usual recommendation. Strong, impressive flow with far less spray obscuring the view, cool dry weather, and clear skies for flights over the gorge. It is also prime safari season across the region, which makes combining the falls with Chobe or Kruger easy.

The river drops and the rock face behind the water becomes visible, which some travellers love and others find underwhelming — by late in this window the Zambian side can run to a trickle in places, while the Zimbabwean side keeps its flow. This is the season for Devil's Pool, Livingstone Island and the best rafting of the year.

Two nights covers the falls themselves comfortably. Three lets you see both banks properly and fit in a cruise and one adrenaline activity without rushing. Most of our travellers treat it as a three-night bolt-on to a longer safari rather than a destination on its own.

Zambia and Zimbabwe both issue visas on arrival for most nationalities, and a shared KAZA UniVisa covering both countries has been available to many passport holders — though its availability has changed more than once, so we confirm the current position for your nationality when we quote. Either way, we handle the border crossing for you.

The falls are far easier to reach than most people expect — both towns have their own airport, minutes from the water, with short connections from the regional hubs.

Victoria Falls Short Break

Both banks, a sunset cruise and one day of your choosing — the add-on we build most often on to a Kruger or East African safari.

Met at Victoria Falls or Livingstone airport and transferred the short distance to your hotel. If the light allows, a first walk to the bridge to see the gorge and hear the falls before the main day tomorrow.

A guided morning along the full length of the rainforest path, viewpoint by viewpoint, with ponchos in high water. Afternoon at leisure, then a sunset cruise on the calm river above the drop, among hippo and elephant.

Cross the bridge for the opposite bank and a completely different angle on the falls.

Kruger & Victoria Falls
